All About Me

“Now he was pretty, With chiseled features, Like movie stars in the magazines, My first love and the son of a preacher, I fantasized he was James Dean” –Dolly Parton, Green Eyed Boy (1995)

1438461166827Recipes for Rebels: in the kitchen with James Dean was compiled and written by Gregory Swenson, a long-time James Dean fan. With the cooperation of  a large network of friends, Greg has been able to fulfill his dream of finally producing this book.

Since the age of 18, Greg was passionate about studying every aspect of James Dean’s life. He also has had a long standing passion for food, cooking, and entertaining.

The concept for Recipes for Rebels began more than 30 years ago when Greg found a flan recipe in an old, dusty celebrity cookbook, attributed to actress Natalie Wood. The recipe was delicious and he made that flan many times, always served up with a story about Natalie Wood and James Dean. That random find, inspired many questions… What did James Dean eat? Did he cook? What where his favorite foods? It also inspired the thought that someone, someday should compile a James Dean cookbook for all the fans. Nobody ever did. All these years later, drawing on his depth of knowledge and Untitled480a wonderful community of experts, Greg decided if you want the job done (and done right), then do it yourself.

Greg was born and raised in a small central Illinois farming community of the same exact size as James Dean’s hometown, Fairmount, IN, and 132 miles due west. He has a unique understanding of the influences that shaped Dean’s upbringing, character and motivation. Mr. Swenson has a background in art and illustration from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, IL. He worked as a layout and paste up artist at a textbook publisher for the University of Illinois before eventually moving on to a highly successful 30 year career as one of St. Louis, MO’s premier florists and event planners. His career earned him many awards and recognitions for his unique and unparalled talents.

flan5 years ago, Greg and his partner Alex moved to the small Greek island of Zakynthos. There he enjoys cooking with the vibrant, fresh flavors of the local cuisine and making his own olives, wine, cheese, and limoncello. He enjoys the slow-paced village life on the Ionian Sea, and occasionally still loves to serve up Natalie Wood’s delicious flan and tell stories about James Dean.
