R4R Zakynthos Book Launch Party

What a day!  (or for that matter, what a week, what a year!)  500 copies of Recipes for Rebels arrived here yesterday (and a huge shipment, now headed for the States).  Up early and headed to the produce market to acquire  some last things for the party.  The colors…the textures…the fragrances…such an inspiring place.  I’ve tried (unsuccessfully) to capture it in photos or video to share here…but someday I’ll get it and you’ll see just what I mean.  Then off to the bakery for more sensual stimulations…

Natalie Wood's Eggplant Cavair

Natalie Wood’s Eggplant Cavair

Arriving back home I started the first of 10 batches of Natalie Wood’s Eggplant Caviar for the party.  Eggplants roasting in the oven, the fragrance of sauteing garlic, onions, peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes starting to fill the house.  (In a moment of inspiration, I added a little Balsamic vinegar to the batch.  I was cooking for a predominantly Greek crowd and there is a lovely local dish of eggplant, roasted in the oven with olive oil, tomatoes, garlic and balsamic and then topped with Feta.)  It worked and the party-goers all went back for seconds (and thirds).  The dish is served on little rounds of brown bread (from our friends at the bakery) with chopped onion and hard boiled egg to garnish.  (you can click on any of the photos to see them larger)

Jim Backus' Avocado/Blue Cheese Salad Dressing (made as a dip)

That was followed up by 10 batches of Jim Backus’ Avocado and Blue Cheese Salad Dressing.  I used less oil in the dressing to make a thicker, dip-like consistency and served it with a crudite of peppers, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, and cauliflower.  It was also a big winner!

Googie's Monte Cristos as prepared by Bluebell

Googie’s Monte Cristos as prepared by Bluebell

The biggest hit of the evening were Googie’s Coffee Shop’s Monte Cristo sandwiches as prepared by Bluebell of Chevy’s American Diner (where the book launch party was held).  Layers of turkey, cheese and ham, inside buttered white bread and then battered and deep fried (French toast-style…or eggy bread for the Brits reading this) and served with a side or raspberry jam.  The kitchen had to refill those plates many times!

A close second in popularity was Bluebell’s rendition of the Chocolate Martini that Liz Taylor and Rock Hudson invented on the set of Giant. They were chocolatey-rich and very addictive!

The most adorable prize has to go to our friends at Idion Bakery who made 100 little mini Elizabeth Taylor’s White Chocolate Banana Cream Pies.  Delicious!

We sold many more books than I expected!  The reviews of the book are overwhelming and I feel truly blessed to be traveling on this journey.  Looking forward to our next event in Fairmount, IN at the end of the month.  See you there!
